Databases answer questions and solve problems

A database management system will let you ask:

Which customers based in Cardiff have not placed an order in the last three months?

Who has ordered Product A but not Product B?

Which kayak instructors have taken groups out in the past six months?

What is a database and why does my business need one?

A database is a collection of data which has been organised so that a computer program can quickly select desired items. This could be something as straightforward as a list of names in alphabetical order, or an ascending list of numeric stock codes. The secret to the successful use of database technology is the way in which data or information is structured to enable efficient processing. For this reason we develop databases using a program called FileMaker Pro.

A well structured business database can save you time, frustration and money by making you much more effecient in the way you manage all kinds of data.

We have developed Filemaker databases for local companies to help manage their contacts, projects, bookings, invoicing and business diaries.

How is a database different to a spreadsheet?

Databases and spreadsheets may seem similar but there are important differences.
A spreadsheet excels at number crunching, not at database management. Spreadsheets let you change a number such as an interest rate and see what impact it has on other numbers, which is fine. However, some people misuse spreadsheets as their database system for holding lists such as project schedules, stock lists or contact information.
