Want to try SEO for yourself? Start here:

Discover some keywords

First you need to do some keyword research. Use the free Google Keywords Tool to find keywords that are relevant to your business.

Edit your title tags

For SEO, the most important meta-tag on a web page is the title tag. This is visible as the strip of text that appears across the top of your browser (look there now). It's the same text that appears in blue when you see the search engine results page (SERP). You'll need to edit your title tags with keyword phrases. Each page of your website needs a unique title tag and should reflect the content of the page.

Replace your description tags

The description tag is the 'snippet' of text that apppears under the blue title on a SERP. It is not visible on your web page - it's tucked away in the HTML code. This tag is used to describe the content of the page. Replace your existing tags (if there are any) with some well written, keyword-rich descriptions that will grab your audience's attention.

Check your webpage copy

Are the words on the pages of your website keyword rich? If not, you need to rewrite them, incorporating your newly discovered keywords.

Build links with other websites

Link building is as important as all of the above and it doesn't happen overnight. Building links from other websites to yours is vital to acheiving good search rankings.

Monitor your results

Sign up for a free Google Analytics account. Drop in the tracker code, then sit back and monitor your website traffic statistics.

What is search engine optimisation?

Search engine optimisation (or SEO for short) is the science of getting your website to the top of the search rankings. If your website is not optimised for search, Google - and therefore your customers will have trouble finding it.

Why is SEO so important?

Over 90% of people using the internet use a search engine such as Google to locate the products and services they want. 84% of these people never make it past the bottom of the second page of a search engine - they give up and try a different search. Having your website in a top 10 position is like having your shop right on the High Street. It's as if people associate the top positions in a search engine with a quality brand. And here's something to think about - 65% of people using a search engine never click on the Google Adwords (or 'sponsored link') results. So if you really want more traffic to your website you need to work hard at 'organic' search results.

Our job is to help get your website onto the first page of Google. There are a number of ways we go about this depending on whether we are dealing with an existing website or a new website. Anatomy of a Google search results page

Take a look at a typical Google search results page. We Googled 'family campsites pembrokeshire' and it brought up the page below.

serp-anatomy

1. Non-paid 'organic' search results

The unshaded area - this is the prize in SEO. We work to get your website onto the first page of Google search - giving you a prime position on the virtual High Street.

2. Local business results

The three results shaded blue - these results are often generated when a geographic location is added to the search term. Note that the top result here is also the same as the two organic search results lower down. This website has acheived three out of the ten positions on the first page! We ensure that your website is optimised to appear in Google local business results.

3. Google Adwords paid advertising or 'sponsored links'

The results shaded green - Google Adwords places your website details on this page at a cost. Remember, 65% of users never click on an Adwords advert - but 35% do. We help you set up your Adwords campaign so you make the very best use of your budget.
